1. It was our old pal “Lord Keynes” who introduced me to David Ramsay Steele. LK insisted that DRS had refuted the idea of socialism being “impossible”. So I bought the Marx to Mises book. My recollection was the DRS said socialism might not be exactly “impossible”, but it would be pretty darn close to it.
That exchange reminds me of the Graeber argument claiming there never was a time when everyone engaged in “spot” transactions. Instead, everyone promised to gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today. Graeber and LK never realized that this is actually a stronger argument in support of the Mengerian explanation for the origin of money than the “spot” transaction theory.
2. I’ve loved Dr. Szasz since at least 1979 when he described Jimmy Carter’s creepy guilt-tripping wife as Big Nurse Ratched. He really did.
