I Got the Blog Host Blues, Baby I Got the Blog Host Blues

All Posts 15 Comments

OK apparently what happened is that the business credit card on file with HostGator expired, and they were sending warning emails to a different account. So I called up HostGator today and did a quick manual payment to get the blog back. Then they told me how to go into my account settings and (a) update my credit card on file and (b) change the primary email for my account, so this doesn’t happen again.

Inasmuch as the interface would have shocked Kafka, I am quite sure I didn’t accomplish either of the above objectives.

As I told you in email, this was probably the result of your running your own nameservers rather than letting your host run them for you. As you told me in email, I was completely wrong. But someday I will be right.

  2. Gene Callahan says:

Steve, it turns out every time Bob and I have discussed anything, I have been completely wrong.

  3. Steven E. Landsburg says:

Gene: I have you beat. I think I’m doubly wrong. A friend with more geek-fu than I observes that ns1.consultingbyrpm.com and ns2.consultingbyrpm.com are pointed to 20.15.78ae.static.theplanet.com and 21.15.78ae.static.theplanet.com , suggesting that Bob just has a hosting account at theplanet.com which makes it *appear* that he’s running his own nameservers. I feel much better now.

Look guys, I didn’t want to be rude, but you leave me no choice: When you get to be as popular and notorious as me, you have to take certain steps to protect yourself from the FBI. I don’t expect either of you to understand.

  5. Ken B says:

Well my theories are all shot too:

    1. The ghost of FDR
    2. God smiting a DNS server
    3. Krugman unleashing a thunderbolt
    4. Drone attack

    • Dyspeptic says:

This post is redundant. Everyone knows there is no difference between Krugman and God.

  6. Major_Freedom says:

Glad to see you blogging again.

I’m not a tekkie, so I am thinking if there is such a thing as free blog service. Is there?

  7. Ken B says:

@MF: There are several. Blogspot.com aka blogger is most popular. Also blog.com and some accounts on wordpress.

  8. Keshav Srinivasan says:

Bob, would you consider introducing timestamps on comments? I think they would be pretty useful.

  9. Christopher says:

The real question is: Why does Bob feel the need to blog about the reason why his blog went down? I mean, I doubt anyone went cold turkey and threatened killed himself.

    • Bob Murphy says:

It doesn’t rise to the level of suicide, Christopher, but lots of people were notifying me that my blog was down. Steve Landsburg was basically in painful withdrawal.

  10. Randy Jackson says:

    yo dawg,

does this mean we gonna miss a sunday religious post?

    much love,
    R Jizzle
