Pledge Your Support for the Murphy-Krugman Debate!

Economics, Shameless Self-Promotion 19 Comments

Last week I saw the Facebook movie and got all fired up. On the car ride home this idea occurred to me. Now I just wait for Sean Parker to see this video and I’m golden.

To see some of Murphy’s critiques of Krugman on business cycle theory, see here and here.

To see Murphy’s song about Krugman, click here. (If it matters, yes, that’s Murphy singing.)

Final note: Yes I am referring to myself in the third person, as an arrogant running back would do at a press conference. But some non-regular readers might see this post and I don’t want them to be confused.

  1. Ash says:

    I approve of this.

    20 bucks from me.

  2. Jonathan M. F. Catalán says:

Awesome computerized voices, by the way.

  3. Jeremy says:

    Krugman complex! HA!

  4. Dan says:

He’ll never do it but im willing to pay to see it. Krugman is like Seinfeld in his “I choose not to run” episode, only I don’t think Krugman will cave to the pressure like Jerry eventually did.

  5. AC says:

Brilliant idea and video. Why at the Mises Institute though? You’re giving Krugman another reason to blow it off, even with the Ezra Klein factor.

    • Bob Murphy says:

AC, it’s a good point, but we also need to get people fired up to donate in the early stages. The Mises Institute is more famous than I am. There are a lot of people who would be willing to pledge $20 or more to see “Krugman face off against a Mises Institute scholar” but not necessarily to see “some guy Murphy debate Krugman in NYC.”

  6. Nico says:

    Great. Donated.

  7. Nico says:

By the way, maybe I can use The Point to finance the lighting of the street I’m living in?

I’ve been taught that lights won’t exist on private roads.

(Never mind … We already have lights, of course.)

  8. Kathryn says:

That was hilarious! I almost didn’t watch the video, but it was really worth it!

  9. Daniel Hewitt says:

Krugman either debates Murphy, or he is against fresh food for poor people in New York.

  10. Nico says:

The Point: “At this time we are unable to process international payments.”

I was asked to coordinate another way to transfer funds.

Any ideas? Preferably one where other Europeans can offer support as well. If not, I’ll just ask a friend in the UK (apparently, payments from the UK are supported.)

  11. Gene Callahan says:

“If not, I’ll just ask a friend in the UK (apparently, payments from the UK are supported.)”

Hilarious. Given UK foreign policy, The Point obviously considers it an American satellite state.

  12. Matthew Mirus says:

Awesome! I think I could die a happy man if this debate actually happens. Pledging now.

  13. Vaughn Kraft says:

Many years ago, when I was a young, starry–eyed college student, I asked Rothbard if he would debate Buckley, and the great MNR responded by saying something like this: “Sure, if I feel okay physically”. I had no idea what MNR’s medical condition was at the time, and the debate never took place (luckily for Buckley) and probably for the best; however, the idea really excited me.

I have always been an MNR backer, as well as a Murphy backer, and the idea still excites me!!!

  14. Bill Anderson says:

    Bob,

You are going to have a cult following, after all! Indeed, I believe you would be a most formidable debater against Krugman — which is why he never would accept. He always puts himself in a situation in which he never has to answer to anyone.

  15. Andrew Mackenzie says:

Just pledged $50! Will probably pledge more later when I’m feeling bold =)

    PLEASE make this happen!

  16. Contemplationist says:

    Bob

I love you but I have a deep dark fear that Krugman will crush you as you seem not to understand the standard new Keynesian monetary econ (Scott Sumner) very well. Please read up on your Scott Sumner if this ever happens. Post 1 to present.

    • bobmurphy says:

At first this slightly offended me, but now I’m glad you said that. It makes me think Krugman will agree to the debate, thinking he will crush me.

  17. James Miller says:

God I hope this happens, $10 donation in.
