==> In this one I explain that the term “Open Borders” has collapsed in face of the Ebola scare. And I don’t just mean among critics–Bryan Caplan himself literally admitted that he would be OK with a minor deviation from his principle because of Ebola. So…where does that leave the “Open Borders” movement?

==> In this one I relate how a cute story with my son turned into a sad commentary on humanity. I hate when that happens.

    Sadly, I do.

Like how Americans don’t get that Common Core (and, more broadly, public schools) and the VA are both based on Communist ideology.

Would-be Freedom Fighters come back to be treated with Commie-style health care. Wow!

And Obamacare is somehow a “marketplace”(!).

May your chains set lightly upon you, America …

I think we will always be in some kind of zoo, the real questions is how much will we punish ourselves and others while we are in said zoo? How much will we enslave ourselves via economical/government/monetary systems.

How many mental constructs that serve nothing more than to torture humanity. IT doesn’t have to be so g-d difficult you know.

  2. Tel says:

Quarantine at the border is a temporary solution to the Ebola problem… it just isn’t feasible to keep it out forever, and given the capability of exponential growth you know that sooner or later it will happen. Having said that, even a temporary protection is better than no protection at all.

The only long term answer is a vaccine, and the Canadians are already claiming success on that one. No doubt it is too early to say for sure, and many details will need to be sorted, but that’s where things are going.

  3. Tel says:

By the way, when it comes to open borders, I think people have a perfect right to leave a community if they don’t like it there, but no right to expect they will automatically be accepted into the community of their choice.

This applies at the household level, you don’t just leave your front door open to anyone and everyone, and it applies at the national level. It should apply at the state level too.

    • Gamble says:

Problem is I am roped into this thing called government. Now I trying to shut or open the front door on my city, county, state, country. The lines of public and private property have been blurred.

      • Tel says:

They always were blurry, who are “the public”?

Should everyone in Africa be asked to vote in US Federal elections?

  4. Julien Couvreur says:

The zoo analogy would still hold in anarchy, just with much smaller zoos, wouldn’t it? Every place eventually has owner(s), no?

  5. K.P. says:

Surely some enterprising critic could take Bryan’s exception and extend it to people with “political” or “cultural diseases” too.

  6. Daniel Kuehn says:

    Prison Planet!!!

That’s catchy – you should start a website with that name.

    • skylien says:

Well, Truman Burbank got it at some point, and broke out.

    • skylien says:

Sorry wasn’t directed at you. Should be a general comment on the post of Bob.

    • skylien says:

      A different question though.

You are against unilateral secession. So do you think Serbia has the right to march against Kosovo and bring them back to the ‘Union’ by military might?

      And if not why not.

      • Daniel Kuehn says:

This is to me? I don’t think I’m against unilateral secession am I?

I don’t think unilateral secession is intrinsically justified – is that what you mean?

        • skylien says:

          Yes, it was for you.

I am not sure what that means. So you are for it, but you don’t think it is justified automatically? When is it not?

I asked, because as far as I remember in one discussion you were saying that if Texas tried to secede unilaterally now, then you would be for sending troops to stop that… I don’t know when this was..

  7. Harold says:

Most of the work developing Ebola therapies and vaccines has been funded by taxes.

“In contrast, the other animals would be disoriented at first, but they would–in the grand scheme–really have no clue what was going on. So long as the aliens provided enough of the necessities in the new environment, the animals would eventually resume their old way of living, as much as that were possible. ” The same would be true of humans, just we would require more for us to resume our old way of living. Imagine a hunter-gatherer human. If transplanted into a new alien environment, he would pretty much resume his old way of living as much as possible.
